Broccoli
About
Broccoli is part of the brassica family of plants (along with cabbage and cauliflower). Broccoli has large dark green flower heads, arranged in a tree-like structure on a green stalk.
Growing and harvesting
Broccoli is grown in Werribee South, Gatton and Tasmania all year round. We grow a number of different varieties, dependent on the time of year and location. Broccoli is hand harvested and hand packed.
Buying
Look for dark green Broccoli with compact heads and firm stems.
Storing
Broccoli is bought in from the paddock as soon as possible, as leaving it out leads to floppy heads. We hydrocool it to pull the field heat out, then store it in the coolroom until it is ready to be packed. Keep your Broccoli in the fridge after purchase.
Cooking
Broccoli is extremely versatile. It can be eaten raw in salads or with dips, and can be sautéed, steamed, boiled, or roasted.
Eating
Broccoli is a nutrient rich vegetable! It is a good source of Vitamins C and K, and a source of fibre, potassium, and folate. It also contains calcium, iron, and phosphorus.
