Contractor Induction
All contractors that wish to work on a Harvest Moon site unattended must complete this induction.
The induction is split into a number of sections. You must read the information in each section to ensure you understand our requirements for contractors on our site.
At the end of the course, you will be required to answer a series of questions about the induction to ensure you have read and understood all elements of the induction.
Purpose of induction
Safety in our workplace is essential and everyone on our site plays a role in maintaining a safe workplace. The aim of this short induction program is to introduce you to our systems of work, and to ensure a safe working environment is provided for our workers, contractors and visitors.
Signing in and out
On arrival, all contractors must report to the main office and sign in. Contractors that have completed this induction and are aware of the task they are completing may then enter the site unaccompanied.
Contractors that have not completed the induction must always be accompanied by a Harvest Moon supervisor whilst on site. It is the responsibility of both the Harvest Moon supervisor and the Contractor to ensure they are aware of all risks and hazards relevant to the specific worksite or task.
When leaving the site, please present to the main office to sign out, and advise your Harvest Moon contact that you have completed your task.
Emergency Evacuation
Knowing how to get out of the factory in case of an emergency is vital. Familiarise yourself with the emergency evacuation plan and your closest emergency exits.
If the fire alarm sounds, follow the instructions from a Fire Warden and calmly move towards the closest emergency exit. Once out of the factory, you must go immediately to the nearest emergency assembly area.
There are three emergency assembly areas on this site. One in the staff car park opposite the main office, one on the levy bank near the new smoking area, and one in the top trailer parking area. These areas are signposted.
Do not leave the site if an evacuation occurs until you have been accounted for by a Fire Warden.
If you are on farm and a fire occurs, for example, if a structure or piece of machinery catches fire, then move away from the affected area and gather together in an open area, away from the fire to allow the Harvest Moon supervisor to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for.
Plant and Equipment
Machinery guards are in place for a reason. These should never be removed, unless you are authorised and trained to do so.
Plant and equipment must be isolated and locked out before maintenance work and repairs are conducted.
If you apply a lockout tag to plant or equipment, please ensure it is removed once work is completed. If you leave a lockout tag on plant or equipment and leave our site, you will be called back to remove the tag.
If you are unfamiliar with this process or are not sure if plant of equipment needs to be locked out, please see your Harvest Moon contact.
Hot work
A hot work permit is required for any operation that involves open flames or produces heat and/or sparks.
Hot work includes but is not limited to brazing, cutting, grinding, soldering and welding.
Please see your Harvest Moon contact for a hot work permit if you need to conduct any of these activities.
Hazardous tasks
Before performing any other tasks that may have increased risks to you and those around you, please speak to the Maintenance Manager or Factory Manager.
These tasks include, but are not limited to, working in confined spaces or working at height.
Traffic and vehicles
Beware of tractors, trucks and forklifts moving around the factory and farm sites; in the factory, two short beeps indicate forklift movement around corners and in and out of coolrooms.
Do not use forklifts as work platforms or lifting devices unless a safety cage has been fitted.
Stay out of areas restricting vehicular access by designated yellow lines and do not leave unattended vehicles running.
Be aware of road safety requirements when crossing or walking along roads and give way to oncoming traffic.
Foreign objects
Loose items of a personal nature must not be taken into the factory or into paddocks as these items can contaminate produce if lost.
These items include, but aren't limited to:
- jewellery
- wallets
- cigarettes
- lighters
Any work-related items taken into the worksite must be removed or disposed of by the contractor when leaving the work area.
These items include:
- tools
- bolts
- screws
- electric cables
- rubbish
Illness and injury
We continue to strive to reduce the number and severity of workplace incidents. To help us do this, you are required to report all workplace incidents.
If you are involved in an accident, an incident, a near miss or sustain an injury whilst at work, you must tell your Harvest Moon contact immediately. They will help you complete an Incident Report form and will assist in the event you are injured.
Incident Report forms are vital in helping us investigate and reduce the risk of incidents reoccurring. Harvest Moon encourages and expects contractors to raise any health and safety concerns with their Harvest Moon contact immediately.
First Aid kits are available in all site offices, on most harvesters, and in most tractors and company vehicles. If you require first aid, please advise your Harvest Moon contact who may request assistance from a trained First Aid Officer.
Cover any wounds, cuts and abrasions with a blue bandaid. Blue bandaids are highly visible, and reduce the risk of a bandaid being lost in product. Bandaids are available from our first aid kits.
If produce is contaminated with blood or other body fluids, you must report this to your Harvest Moon contact immediately to allow us to discard any produce that has been contaminated and clean up the spill.
As we are a food production site, we must be mindful about illness.
A number of illnesses can be passed on through food including Hepatitis A and those caused by parasites and bacteria such as giardia, salmonella and campylobacter.
If you are suffering from a foodborne illness or a communicable disease, please do not visit our site until you have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
Alcohol and drugs
Alcohol and drugs, both illicit and illegal, are not permitted on any Harvest Moon site.
Any person under the influence will not be permitted entry.
Any person suspected to be under the influence must be reported to management.
Contractors may be asked to participate in random drug and alcohol testing. A 0.00 reading is expected for contractors.
Positive results wll result in the contracto being asked to leave the site. Contractors testing positive may notbe permitted back on site.
A copy of our Alcohol and Drug procedure is available upon request.
Hygiene
Please do not bring any domestic animals with you to our site - even if you are working outside.
These animals have the potential to contaminate our produce. Vermin, rodents and animals such as rats, mice, feral cats and possums can cause damage and contamination of produce.
Report any sightings of these animals to your Harvest Moon contact.
Handwashing is vitally important to prevent the spread of disease.
Handwashing signs are displayed at various points around the site, and provide instructions for how to adequately wash your hands.
It is important to wash your hands after using the toilet, eating, smoking and handling animals.
Use hand sanitiser after waashing hands and when enytering production facilities.
Eating is not permitted in any factory or yard areas, or in paddocks. This includes chewing gum and lollies.
Food and drinks must be consumed in designated areas only. The exception to this rule is water. We encourage you to drink plenty of water whilst working, particularly if you are in a highly physical position, or are working outside. Water can be consumed in the factory and yard areas, and in paddocks, but must only be kept in plastic or metal bottles.
Glass bottles, cans, milk cartons and other disposable containers are not permitted. Do not leave bottles on top of machinery or equipment.
General
You must wear high visibility clothing and closed in shoes when entering any farm, yard or factory areas.
Observe all warning signs. These signs highlight potential areas of risk. Stick to posted speed limits. Speeds are limited to 5 kilometres an hour within the factory and 10 kilometres an hour in the yard and paddocks, unless otherwise posted.
Stay behind yellow lines and orange barriers wherever possible. These lines and barriers ensure pedestrians and traffic are kept separate and safe. Where there are no designated walkways, be aware of forklift movement.
For your safety, it is imperative that you don’t walk under suspended loads, run in the factory, yard or paddocks, jump down, or throw material from raised areas. and climb on bins.
You must not handle any hazardous substances or chemicals unless you are trained and authorised to do so. A Safety Data Sheet will be available on site (either in hard copy or electronically) for all hazardous substances and chemicals.
Unless permitted by Harvest Moon management, contractors are not to use phones, cameras or video camera equipment for recording purposes in any Harvest Moon workplace. This includes all structures, yard areas, and paddocks owned, leased or contracted by Harvest Moon. Be aware that security cameras are constantly monitoring factory, yard areas and some farm areas.
Smoke in designated areas only - this includes e-cigarettes. Your Harvest Moon contact can advise you of where the designated smoking areas are located.
Due to the ongoing risk of COVID-19 to our workplace, please ensure you do not come onto our site if have COVID and are symptomatic. Practice COVID-safe behaviours at all times.
